Product Description
Original First World War Imperial German 15cm s.F.H. Heavy Field Howitzer brass cartridge case, manufactured by Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe.
A superb original example of the distinctive short, wide brass cartridge case used with the German 15cm schwere Feldhaubitze (s.F.H.) heavy field howitzer family, including the 15cm s.F.H. 02, s.F.H. 13 and long-barrelled lg. s.F.H. 13.
Unlike conventional artillery cartridge cases, this heavy howitzer case was manufactured in an unusually short format, measuring only approximately 11cm high despite its substantial 15cm calibre. This example has not been cut down and retains its original short cartridge-case form.
The base carries excellent original Imperial German factory and production markings, including the prominent:
PATRONENFABRIK KARLSRUHE
manufacturer's marking, together with wartime date, production/control markings and the distinctive factory trademark.
The 15cm s.F.H. was one of the most important German heavy artillery weapons of the First World War. The earlier s.F.H. 02 was in widespread service at the outbreak of war and was subsequently supplemented and replaced by the improved s.F.H. 13 and lg. s.F.H. 13. These weapons fired substantial projectiles weighing around 40kg and became a mainstay of German heavy field artillery.
The brass displays an excellent untouched aged patina with surface marks, staining and wear consistent with an original wartime artillery case. The primer is absent and the case is completely empty and inert.
A particularly impressive and instantly recognisable piece of original Imperial German First World War heavy artillery history, with excellent manufacturer's markings.
