Product Description
Original .50 calibre (12.7×77mm) spotting/ranging cartridge, headstamped LC 57, manufactured by the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, USA, in 1957.
This distinctive shortened .50 calibre cartridge was designed for spotting rifles used with recoilless anti-tank weapons. The spotting round enabled the gunner to establish the correct point of aim before firing the main weapon. British examples of the system were employed with the 120mm L6 WOMBAT (Weapon of Magnesium, Battalion Anti-Tank) recoilless rifle.
The 12.7×77mm cartridge is considerably shorter than the standard 12.7×99mm .50 BMG cartridge and is often referred to by collectors as the .50 BAT spotting round. US M48-series Spotter-Tracer cartridges were produced specifically for this role.
This example retains a clean brass case, distinctive long projectile and clearly legible LC 57 headstamp.
