Product Description
This original Patterson Type A1 miner’s safety lamp, numbered 426, is an excellent example of early 20th-century British mining engineering. Produced in Gateshead-on-Tyne by Patterson, a respected maker of safety lamps for coal mines and heavy industry, the Type A1 model was widely used across the northern coalfields. Its robust brass and steel construction, glass bonnet, and gauze flame protector were designed to provide reliable illumination in potentially hazardous atmospheres while reducing the risk of gas ignition.
The lamp features its original manufacturer’s marks, including the Patterson name, Type A1 designation, location, and the individual serial number 426, giving it strong historical authenticity and traceability. These lamps were routinely used by miners to test for the presence of firedamp and to provide safe working light deep underground. Today, surviving numbered examples are prized by collectors of industrial heritage, mining memorabilia, and early safety equipment.
This lamp makes a striking display piece with significant historical character, suitable for museums, collectors, or themed interiors. It also appeals to enthusiasts of North-East coal mining history, where Patterson lamps were widely issued.
