Product Description
A superb original Imperial German First World War brass artillery cartridge case, clearly dated December 1917 (DEZ 1917), representing an authentic piece of wartime ordnance history. This impressive case retains crisp original base markings including St, 313, 1917, 67% Cu, and HL / 31, believed to denote wartime contractor and production batch details.
Manufactured during the final year of the Great War, this case reflects the vast industrial effort behind German artillery production, with the brass alloy composition marked 67% copper, a fascinating period detail showing wartime material specifications. Cases of this type were used with German field artillery, which played a decisive role across the Western Front during trench warfare.
Of particular interest, the case shows faint secondary markings believed to resemble the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) badge, possibly added later as a period souvenir, unit marking, or post-war commemorative embellishment. While worn and indistinct, these markings add further character and collector appeal.
Its tall straight-sided form and attractive aged brass finish make it a striking display item for collectors of German militaria, WW1 relics, battlefield history, and military antiques. The clearly dated headstamp adds strong collector interest, placing its manufacture in December 1917, only months before the final campaigns of the war.
An excellent original piece ideal for display in a study, office, museum collection, or militaria cabinet. Increasingly difficult to source with clear markings and strong visual presence.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related marks, patina, polishing wear, and service marks consistent with age.
