The 1939-1945 Star was a campaign medal awarded to military personnel of the British Commonwealth and Allied forces who served in various theaters of operations during World War II. The medal was instituted by the United Kingdom in 1945 to recognize operational service between certain dates in 1939 and 1945.

The criteria for awarding the 1939-1945 Star varied depending on the specific theater of service:

  1. Battle of Britain (1940): Personnel serving in the Royal Air Force (RAF) or Fleet Air Arm (FAA) and aircrew who participated in the Battle of Britain between July 10 and October 31, 1940, were eligible.

  2. Theaters of Operations (1939-1945): For service in specified operational areas, including Europe, North Africa, and the Far East, between certain dates.

To qualify for the award, individuals needed to have completed a certain period of operational service. The criteria varied based on the theater, but typically, six months of operational service were required for those serving in specified areas.

The 1939-1945 Star was a six-pointed star, and its design featured the Royal Cypher of King George VI in the center with the inscription "The 1939-1945 Star" around the perimeter. The ribbon had alternating dark blue and red stripes, symbolizing the night and day skies.
