The .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) cartridge case is a well-known and widely used ammunition component primarily associated with handguns chambered for the .45 ACP caliber. Here's an overview of its features and characteristics:
-
Caliber: The .45 ACP cartridge has a bullet diameter of .451 inches (11.5 mm) and is commonly loaded with bullets weighing between 185 and 230 grains (12 to 15 grams).
-
Case Type: The .45 ACP cartridge case is rimless and straight-walled. This design facilitates smooth feeding and reliable extraction in firearms with box magazines or other feeding mechanisms.
-
Case Material: The cases are typically made of brass, chosen for its properties such as malleability, corrosion resistance, and ease of reloading. Brass cases are the most common for civilian and higher-quality ammunition.
-
Rim: As mentioned, the .45 ACP cartridge case is rimless, meaning the base of the cartridge is of the same diameter as the body. This design allows for reliable feeding and extraction in firearms with box magazines.
-
Primer Type: The cases are typically equipped with Boxer primers, which are common in Western-produced ammunition. Boxer primers feature a single flash hole and are conducive to reloading by handloaders due to their design.
-
Usage: The .45 ACP cartridge case is primarily used in handguns chambered for the .45 ACP caliber, including iconic firearms like the Colt M1911 pistol and its variants, as well as numerous other handguns from various manufacturers. It has been used by military, law enforcement, and civilian shooters for over a century and remains popular for self-defense, target shooting, and competition shooting.
