Product Description

The Russian 7.62x39mm cartridge case is a widely used centerfire rifle cartridge case known for its association with the AK-47 and its variants, as well as many other firearms. Here's a breakdown of its features and characteristics:

  1. Caliber: The cartridge is officially designated as 7.62x39mm, indicating a bullet diameter of 7.62 millimeters (0.30 inches) and a case length of 39 millimeters. It's a medium-caliber cartridge.

  2. Case Type: The 7.62x39mm cartridge case is a rimless, bottlenecked design. This means that the base of the cartridge is of a smaller diameter than the case body, and it lacks a rim protruding beyond the case diameter, which aids in smooth feeding and extraction in firearms with box magazines.

  3. Case Material: Typically, these cases are made of brass, steel, or polymer-coated steel. Brass cases are most common for civilian and higher-quality ammunition, while steel cases are often used in military surplus and budget ammunition due to their lower cost.

  4. Rim: As mentioned earlier, the 7.62x39mm cartridge case is rimless, meaning the base diameter is the same as the body diameter of the case. This design facilitates reliable feeding in firearms with detachable box magazines.

  5. Shoulder Angle: The cartridge features a moderate shoulder angle, aiding in reliable chambering and extraction in firearms with various action types.

  6. Primer Type: The cases are typically equipped with Boxer or Berdan primers, depending on the manufacturer and intended use. Boxer primers are more common in Western-produced ammunition and allow for easier reloading by handloaders due to their single-flash hole design. Berdan primers, more common in Eastern-produced ammunition, have multiple flash holes and are generally not designed for reloading by the end user.

  7. Usage: The 7.62x39mm cartridge case is primarily associated with rifles like the AK-47 and its derivatives, including the AKM and AK-74. It has seen extensive use in military conflicts around the world and is also popular among civilian shooters for target shooting and hunting.
