Product Description
An original UMC .30 U.S. Army (.30-40 Krag) inert cartridge, manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company (UMC) of Bridgeport, Connecticut, before its merger with Remington.
The headstamp "UMC .30 USA" identifies manufacture by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company, one of America's most important ammunition manufacturers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The .30 USA designation refers to the .30 U.S. Army, better known today as the .30-40 Krag, adopted by the U.S. Army in 1892 for the Krag–Jørgensen rifle and carbine.
Unlike later REM-UMC headstamps, the plain UMC .30 USA marking dates from before the 1911 merger of Union Metallic Cartridge Company with Remington Arms. Early UMC cartridges are therefore more desirable to collectors, representing ammunition produced during the original independent UMC era. Contemporary cartridge collectors note that the transition from UMC .30 USA to REM-UMC 30 USA occurred shortly after the merger, with early REM-UMC boxes still containing UMC-headstamped cartridges before the new headstamp became standard.
The .30-40 Krag served throughout the Spanish–American War, Philippine–American War, the Boxer Rebellion, and remained in military, National Guard and sporting use for many years after being superseded by the .30-03 and .30-06.
