Product Description

An original U.S. .30-40 Krag (.30 U.S. Army) inert cartridge manufactured by Frankford Arsenal, featuring the early split headstamp pattern used before the adoption of the later "FA" style in 1902.

The headstamp displays the classic early Frankford Arsenal arrangement with the "F" and "A" positioned separately around the primer, together with the month of manufacture (August – "8"). Unfortunately, the final year digit is too worn to be read with certainty, but the headstamp style confirms manufacture during the early production period before the revised 1902 format. Frankford Arsenal used this split-letter arrangement from the introduction of the .30 Army cartridge in 1894 until July 1902, after which the headstamp changed to the familiar "FA" at the top with month and year at the bottom.

The .30-40 Krag became the first smokeless powder service cartridge officially adopted by the United States Army. Introduced in 1892 for the Krag–Jørgensen rifle and carbine, it saw extensive service during the Spanish–American War (1898), the Philippine–American War, and the Boxer Rebellion before gradually being replaced by the M1903 Springfield.

This example is fitted with the correct 220-grain round-nosed full metal jacket projectile and retains the attractive silvery finish characteristic of many early Frankford Arsenal cartridges. Early Krag cartridges went through several manufacturing changes, including alterations to case finish, primers and bullet design, making them a fascinating collecting field.

An excellent addition to any collection of U.S. military ammunition, Spanish–American War memorabilia, Krag–Jørgensen rifles, or Frankford Arsenal headstamps.
