Product Description
An original inert German 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge bearing the P186 S 8 1940 headstamp. This is a genuine Second World War military cartridge manufactured for the Wehrmacht during 1940, one of the most significant years of Germany's early wartime campaigns.
The P186 manufacturer code identifies Metallwerk Wolfenbüttel GmbH, located in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The factory became part of the Polte industrial group and began producing military cartridge cases during the German rearmament programme. Ammunition bearing the P186 code is recognised as early production from this manufacturer and is sought after by collectors of German military headstamps.
Headstamp Breakdown
- P186 – Metallwerk Wolfenbüttel GmbH (part of the Polte Group)
- S – Brass cartridge case
- 8 – Production Lot 8
- 1940 – Year of manufacture
The S marking denotes a brass cartridge case. During 1940, many German factories were still manufacturing brass-cased ammunition before steel (St) cases became widespread as a means of conserving strategic metals.
This cartridge would have been issued for use in the Wehrmacht's standard 7.92×57mm weapons, including:
- Karabiner 98k (K98k)
- Gewehr 98
- MG34
- Early wartime MG42 production
- Other German weapons chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge
Manufactured during Germany's early wartime expansion, this cartridge represents an important period in Wehrmacht ammunition production and is an excellent addition to any collection of German militaria, Mauser rifles or military headstamps.
