Product Description

This impressive set of British RL (Royal Laboratory) .303 drill rounds, housed in an original WWI pattern charger, represents an authentic example of British training ammunition from the early 20th century. The Royal Laboratory at Woolwich was the primary ammunition development and manufacturing centre for the British Army during the Great War, producing millions of rounds to support frontline troops and training establishments across the Empire.

These drill cartridges were purpose-built for safe instructional use, allowing soldiers to practise loading, unloading, magazine drills, and weapon handling with the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) and other .303-calibre rifles. Unlike inert converted live rounds, factory-made drill rounds were designed to be visually distinct, often featuring fluted or marked cases and inert primers, ensuring immediate identification during training.

The included WWI charger is period correct and fully functional, giving a faithful representation of how ammunition was issued and loaded during the war. Together, the charger and drill rounds form an attractive and historically valuable display piece.

Ideal for collectors of Lee-Enfield rifles, Great War militaria, or British ammunition history, this Royal Laboratory drill set offers an authentic glimpse into Britain’s WWI training practices and ordnance production.
