Vintage WW1 Silver Plated Military Campaign Stove & Fuel Can
A metal drinks can containing a small screw-top metal bottle for fuel and a small stove to place fuel in. Can sits on top of stove. Everything packs away neatly inside the drinks can for easy transportation (see insert photo).
Date unknown but suspected to be from WW1 or 2. Marked on base RP434364 with 19 underneath. Also marked BRITISH MAKE.
Can approximately 4 inches high (just over) by 2.75 inches in diameter.
Small spirit sets are often described as military but in fact are usually from picnic sets. However, the ones from picnic sets are normally plated or copper/brass and often in leather cases. This set does not have a military look about it, ie.. dull and functional. The spirit can has some shine but this is probably as it's been protected through storage inside the can.
From the measurements given, the can has a capacity of .38 litre, which is about the same as a can of coke. This would fit easily into a soldiers pocket or webbing pouch. In my soldiering days I would have loved a little personal set like this. I used to carry a small half pint thermos of Bovril in my webbing and must have broken dozens over the years.
The trademark above the wording 'British Make' is that of Henry Loveridge & Co, Wolverhampton, England. They made all sorts of metalware and stopped trading in 1927.Ā Link to Loveridge history.
