Product Description

This 1940 dated 9mm inert cartridge bears the wartime manufacturer code P405, identifying production by Rheinisch‑Westfälische Sprengstoff A.-G. (RWS) at their Werk Durlach facility in Germany. During the Second World War, German ammunition manufacturers were assigned numerical factory codes to conceal production locations, and P405 was the designation used for the Durlach plant.

The 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge was the standard pistol and submachine gun ammunition used by German forces throughout the war. It was issued for sidearms such as the Luger P08 and Walther P38 pistols, as well as for submachine guns, including the MP38 and MP40. Ammunition produced in 1940 represents the early wartime manufacturing period when German industry was rapidly increasing output to support expanding military operations.

This example features a brass case with the factory code and date stamped on the head, typical of German wartime ammunition identification practices. The round has been completely deactivated and rendered inert, meaning the primer has been oiled making it safe for handling, display, and collecting.

Collectors value coded German cartridges such as this for their historical significance and for their clear connection to wartime industrial production and military supply systems.
